Overview

Modern neuroscience has overturned decades of assumptions about how the human brain works. Rather than passively receiving and reacting to information, your brain is an active prediction machine โ€” constantly generating expectations about what will happen next, then comparing those predictions against reality. This discovery has profound implications for every field Voice Up students work in: clinical social work, education, public health, community advocacy, and technology design. When a trauma survivor flinches at a safe touch, when a student gives up before trying, when a community rejects a free health service โ€” these are not failures of logic. They are the predictive brain doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect based on past experience. This case study connects predictive brain science directly to the five Voice Up Principles โ€” Collaboration, Humility, Precision, Patience, and Empathy โ€” and challenges you to redesign your practice around how the brain actually works.

"Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful."
